Merlin Air Conditioning Services
Your cars air conditioning system will lose 10-15% of its refrigerant every year. If thi left untreated, fuel economy is affected when the system is run. The compressor has to work harder to generate the correct temperatures when the refrigerant level is low. This costs you money as it uses more fuel. In addition, the lower the refrigerant level, the greater the likelihood of component failure.
What is that Smell?
If, when you switch on the A/C system, the odour from the vents is not as fresh as it should be or as one of our customers described it "an odour equivalent to a long neglected laundry basket", then the A/C system requires servicing. Your owners manual will recommend that you have your Air Con serviced every 24 months, although this doesn't fall under the remit of a standard service on most modern vehicles. It is an extra that if you remember to ask to get done can cost you an arm and a leg in a main dealer. The state of your Air Con is vital to having an enjoyable drive and as such you should watch out for the following symptoms that your Air Con is faulty.
- The temperature is not cold enough
- Your windows are still misted
- Strange smells
- Strange noises when the Air Con is active
Important Safety Warning !
Please note that all A/C systems contain potentially harmful CFC or HFC gases under very high pressures. Exposure to the refrigerant can cause cold burns and blindness. Additionally, deliberate release of refrigerant is a criminal offence with penalties of up to 5 years imprisonment with an unlimited fine. The only safe way to maintain your system is through a bi- annual service by a trained and qualified A/C technician using specialised equipment. Whatever you do, don’t attempt to service or maintain your own A/C system. DIY aerosol cans such as found on Ebay are highly dangerous and should be avoided.
Q: What happens if a system is not regularly serviced?
A: If an aircon system is not serviced, a build-up of moisture will occur. The built-in filter (receiver-drier or accumulator), is designed to store any moisture and contamination present in the system. If the filter is not changed then its element will eventually break down and cause internal damage to the air conditioning system.
Q: Why can I smell a ‘musty’ smell inside the car when I turn on the aircon?
A: This is due to the build-up of mould and microbes on the evaporator. It can be cured with a microbiological treatment of the evaporator unit during the annual health check.
Q: Is there anything I can do to keep the aircon working?
A: On a modern vehicle, the best advice is to run the aircon continuously. Modern systems are efficient and will not add greatly to the fuel consumption. Continuous running ensures that the refrigerant and oil are circulated throughout the system, keeping the seals lubricated and preventing microbe build-up on the evaporator. If you have a standard AC system and not Climate Control then run the system for a minimum of ten minutes a week. If you are unsure how to correctly use your AC system then please call in and we will show you how at no charge.

Many drivers complain that their car air conditioning smells musty. This is due to a build-up of microbes and bacteria on the cooling elements, known as the evaporator. Not only does this smell awful, but it is potentially harmful to those with low resistance to infection.
The good news is that these car air conditioning smells can be eliminated with a simple treatment.
We remove the pollen filter and inject the treatment deep into the air intake where it will kill the bacteria, leaving your car both healthier and fresher-smelling.
